Kidepo Valley National Park Gates: Entry Points & Access

The Kidepo Valley National Park in the remote north-eastern Karamoja region of Uganda, is entered via a number of named entry gates, each representing a different approach route and managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The park’s main headquarters is located at Apoka near the Narus Valley but the park can also be accessed from other directions and into different wildlife zones via Lokumoit, Nataba, Kalokudu, Lopie, Lotukei and Natoruk. Which gate a traveller uses depends largely on where they’re approaching from and which part of the park they want to explore.

Apoka Gate & Headquarters: The Central Hub

Apoka sits at the heart of the park, close to the Narus Valley, and functions as Kidepo’s main administrative checkpoint rather than a single boundary crossing. It’s open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for registration, fee payment, and arranging guided walks, and it sits in one of the park’s most productive wildlife-viewing areas. Most travellers pass through Apoka at some stage of their visit, since UWA offices, ranger guide services, and the bulk of the park’s accommodation are concentrated here.

Lokumoit Gate: The Gulu-Kitgum Approach

Lokumoit Gate, on the southwestern side of the park, is the most direct access route for travellers driving in from Gulu and Kitgum, the road corridor most commonly used for an overland journey to Kidepo. For anyone approaching from northern Uganda by road, this is typically the entry point before continuing on to Apoka.

Nataba Gate: The Karamoja Route

Nataba Gate sits on the southeastern side of the park and serves travellers arriving through the remote Karamoja subregion, via Moroto and Kotido. It’s the relevant entry point for anyone combining a Kidepo visit with a wider Karamoja itinerary rather than approaching from Gulu or Kitgum.

Kalokudu Gate: Game Drives Near Karenga

Positioned near Karenga, Kalokudu Gate opens directly onto the Kalokudu sector and is a popular starting point for game drives. The area is known for high concentrations of elephants, lions, and buffaloes, making it a strong choice for travellers prioritising predator and large-mammal sightings.

Lopie Gate: Open Savannah

Lopie Gate, in the park’s western sector, leads into open savannah grassland frequented by giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. It suits travellers more interested in grazing wildlife and sweeping grassland scenery than the denser predator activity found elsewhere.

Lotukei Gate: Hiking Terrain

Lotukei Gate sits in more rugged terrain and is better suited to hikers than standard game drives. The surrounding landscape is known for sightings of smaller carnivores and warthogs rather than the park’s larger mammals.

Natoruk Gate: Birding in the North

Natoruk Gate (also referred to as Nataruk) lies in the park’s northernmost zone and is particularly known for its birding, including ostriches and vultures, alongside other species adapted to the dry, open terrain of the far north.

Getting to the Gates

Most travellers reach Kidepo by 4WD road vehicle, a journey of roughly 10 to 13 hours from Kampala depending on the route and road conditions. Travellers short on time can instead fly into Lomej Airstrip by charter flight and continue by road into the park, cutting the overland journey significantly. Flight schedules and routing vary by operator, so these should be confirmed directly when booking.

Documents Required at Entry

Visitors need valid identification at the gate: a passport for foreign nationals or a national ID for Ugandan citizens and East African Community residents where applicable. Self-drive travellers also need valid vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

Which Gate Should a Traveller Use?

The right gate depends on the direction of approach and what a traveller wants to see. Those driving from Gulu or Kitgum will generally enter via Lokumoit, while those coming through the Karamoja subregion use Nataba. Travellers focused on predator sightings often head toward Kalokudu, those after classic grassland scenery toward Lopie, hikers toward Lotukei, and birders toward Natoruk. Apoka, as the central hub, is where most visitors end up regardless of which boundary gate they entered through, since it holds the park’s main facilities and ranger services.
