Gorilla Trekking In The Buhoma Sector

Gorilla Trekking In The Buhoma Sector.

Uganda has sectors where tourism can have a chance of mountain gorilla trekking, and the Buhoma Sector of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was the pioneer of gorilla trekking tourism in the country. With the habituation of the Mubare gorilla family in 1993, Buhoma became the first site in Uganda where tourism was opened to enable tourists to follow mountain gorillas through the natural forest habitat of the endangered primates. Since then, Buhoma has been a major tourism attraction site among primate lovers, nature lovers and adventurous tourists in the world.

Buhoma Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the northern section of the Park, which is in Kanungu District, South Western Uganda. Even Bwindi as a region is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its great biodiversity and due to its montane rainforest, which is regarded as an old rainforest. The Buhoma Sector is nearly 1500 meters above sea level, and the area surrounding the Buhoma is filled with foggy hills, tropical flora and streams.

It is critical since Buhoma became the first industry with gorilla trekking in Uganda, and this made it possible to initiate conservation-based tourism. Buhoma is one of the most visited areas in all of Bwindi nowadays, alongside Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo.

Gorilla Families in Buhoma

Buhoma has several habituated gorilla families, whose different trekking experience is provided:

Mubare Family – This is the first gorilla family to be habituated (completely) at Bwindi (1993) and is a relatively small family with significant historical importance.

Habinya Family – Habinya is one of the biggest families, and it is known to have fun and has a number of silverbacks.

Rushegura Family – An ideally serene gorilla family that is frequently spotted roaming immensely near lodges in Buhoma.

Katwe Family – The newest gorilla family to be habituated, which has increased the trekking choices twofold.

Gorillas have various behaviours, characteristics and group features, which make every trek unique in each gorilla family.

Preparation and Briefing

The day begins normally at the park headquarters of Buhoma, where trekkers register and get briefed on what to expect on the trek. The rules, the behaviour of gorillas, safety restrictions, etc, are explained to the trekkers in the presence of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers and before any traveller goes out to trek, the group will have a chance to visit their office and present their permits, etc and say goodbye. The groups of eight visitors (depending on permits) will only hike with one gorilla family per day to avoid causing much disturbance to the gorillas themselves. It is important at least to have a sense of the lifestyle that they live.

The Trekking Experience

Gorilla treks take 2-6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Most of the time, tourists get to explore the forest trails, stratification of steep hills, and thick undergrowth with the help of the rangers and trackers. Adventure is dressed up by hiking, and one can expect to come across birds, butterflies, monkeys, and the beautiful greenery of the rainforest.

Meeting the Gorillas

It is to see the gorillas that is the climax of any walk. The observation also takes one hour to view the gorillas. It is a deep view, watching a silverback as he heads his family, underage playing, or a mother suckling babies. There are those visitors who stay in the place up to an hour with their mouths open because they are fascinated with the various faces and actions of the gorillas.

After Hiking the Gorillas

At the end of the trek, the groups turn back and walk to the headquarters. The majority of lodges in Buhoma have a range of activities that you can do after the trek, such as cultural shows or nature hikes, to really complete the one-of-a-kind experience.

Rules and regulations

There are rules and regulations to assist in protecting the gorillas and ensure the visitor experience is safe.

Keep 7 meters away from gorillas,

Do not trek if you are crook. Diseases that are transmitted by human beings easily infect the gorillas.

Speeches must be low and gestures must not be difficult.

Photography can be done, but no flash.

Not more than an hour with gorillas.

The rules and regulations are beneficial towards ensuring that there is sustainable gorilla tourism, as a visitor will have a balanced experience coupled with the preservation of the gorillas.

Cultural and Community Interactions.

Among other things, the manner in which the Buhoma cultural tour integrates community development with gorilla tourism is something that makes it stand out. The local people, such as the Batwa (Pygmy) people and the Bakiga people, have come up with cultural activities that can be used alongside the trekking.

Batwa cultural tours: Visitors get to study the original forest livelihood, hunting and dancing cultures of the Batwa.

Craft markets: Women have cooperatives that produce baskets, beads and carvings that are handcrafted.

Walks in the village: Guided village walks around the farms, tea (large), and schools to discover the rural way of life in Uganda.

The above activities provide the travellers with the human aspect of the conservation and sustain the livelihood of the locals.

Other Activities in Buhoma

Buhoma also offers gorilla trekking, but has other activities:

Nature walks: It is hard to walk on the trails without visiting River Munyaga and the Muyanga waterfall, which is a pleasant walking place in the forest.

Watching birds: There are more than 350 species of birds in Buhoma Birds of the Albertine Rift, which include the African green broadbill and the handsome francolin.

Buhoma to Nkuringo hike: It is a full-day walk, which links the two parts of the Bwindi sectors with breathtaking forest views.

These other activities emphasise the fact that Buhoma is not only a gorilla trekking destination but also a complete eco-tourism destination.

Gorilla trekking in Buhoma can be organised throughout the year, although the best months are the dry months (Jun-Sep and Dec-Feb). The tracks are less prone to being slippery, and the hikes are less demanding. Wet seasons (Mar-May and Oct-Nov) will be beautiful in terms of greenery, although hiking will be more difficult.

Conclusion

The gorilla tracking of the Buhoma Sector of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is not only a tourism experience but also a chance to see one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, and an opportunity to see our closest relatives in the wild. The theme of Tracks entitles one to a lifetime with the family of Mubarak, the family who was once called the Rushegura.
